Stryd
An iconic running wearable inspired by the contours of nature
Industrial Design | Packaging Design | Art Direction
We partnered with STRYD, an athletic wearable startup, to design their flagship product—the STRYD foot pod for runners. This device tracks and measures running power and performance. We drew inspiration from nature to create a visually striking design language. By incorporating the organic forms of nature into the product's shape, we created an iconic look that appeals to both professional and mainstream runners. The resulting design has become a beacon for the STRYD brand and has helped to create a loyal customer base.
Abstraction of Nature
STRYD is designed for runners who primarily exercise outdoors in a variety of natural environments. The inspiration for its design comes from the contours of mountains and the ripples of water, creating an abstract yet familiar form that sets it apart from other consumer electronics wearables.
STRYD is a shoe-mounted power meter that helps you improve your running efficiency by measuring it, identifying performance bottlenecks, providing personalized cardiovascular and strength training, and form improvements. It also offers power-based training intensity control and race-day pacing, which are essential for any runner looking to improve their performance. With STRYD, you can run faster and more efficiently.
STRYD can be paired with different smartphones or GPS running watches, and data is automatically synced during each run.
Structure Exploration
Our design team explored various forms for STRYD inspired by fluid motions and mountain topography. The sketches also included considerations for LED treatment, clip forms, wind sensor locations, and other design elements.
The clip design was engineered for reliability and security. A matching charging dock was also developed.
The 2020 STRYD pod introduced wind sensing as a way to get accurate power reading even when running against the wind.
We optimized the battery size while keeping the overall size and weight similar to the 2016 pod, making STRYD an ideal running companion. Users will barely notice they're wearing STRYD and can perform at their best.
